Uber Hernandez – Portland State University

Uber studies business and loves that PSU has many opportunities to network and work with industry leaders from the Portland area and beyond.

Portland State University, Class of 2020

Degree: Business Administration: Marketing

My career aspiration is to work at a publishing company like Conde Nast. Marketing is the field that can fulfill that goal.

What did you think about college before you attended?

I thought navigating college would be difficult since I did not have any mentor or familial support. I was scared to fail and end up dropping out.

How do you think being a first generation student has affected your college experience?

It has its disadvantages being a first generation because the familial support is lacking. I wanted my family to understand that college is more complex and overwhelming in financing your education.

What do you love about PSU?

I love that PSU offers so much opportunity to network with industry leaders and business to build on a strong personal resume to become marketable once graduated.

How was the experience of starting somewhere new?

It was exciting but also very difficult to find a new community and make new friends. The fear of being unhappy somewhere new was always present but being ambitious and driven I have been able to adapt and find my sense of belonging.

What is your favorite subject or class you’ve taken?

The last class I took was a Marketing Management course and it was the most rewarding. I learned a different aspect of marketing that I did not know about. Working on a project was the most rewarding in building strong connection with my classmates.

What has been the most impactful experience during your time in college?

I came into college not having much resource to access but overtime I found organizations like Omega Delta Phi Inc. and the Deans Future Leader Group which has shaped me to become a leader in different areas that I was not confident in being before.

If you have ever attended our scholarship brunches, how did those go for you?

I have always felt much appreciation of attending the scholarship brunches. It highlights the importance of the scholarship as well as being able to see the donors which makes it even more rewarding being a recipient of the prestigious scholarship.

What does it mean to you to have been chosen as a Renaissance Scholar?

It means everything to me being a Renaissance Scholar because the reason I am still in college finishing my degree is because of the scholarship. My dreams of finishing my degree at PSU was going to end due to finances but becoming a Renaissance Scholar made it possible to return to college and work hard to do well academically and professionally.
