Degree: Accounting – I enjoy working with numbers, data entry, as well as data analysis. I am also interested in getting a minor degree in the Technology Management field.
What did you think about college before you attended?
During my senior year of high school, I thought that college would be a lot more stressful than high school and I was afraid that I might not be able to finish my first year with satisfying grades. However, now that I have come close to the end of my first year in college, I am proud to see myself present in the President’s List at Portland State University.
How do you think being a first generation student has affected your college experience?
I think that being a first generation student gave me the extra push to try even harder to become successful in my academic pathway. I want to set the path for my future generations that no hardships will prevent you from being successful if you keep trying your best.
What do you love about PSU?
Portland State University is very diverse of a community. I have never felt that I am an outsider or different from others. We all share some similarities that bring us together.
How was the experience of starting somewhere new?
It reminds me of when my family and I first migrated to the United States. Everything was new and there was a huge cultural shock. But as time passes by, I was able to adopt to the ways of living here in America and was able to see and value the cultural aspects at a place once was foreign to me.
What is your favorite class you’ve taken?
My most favorite class that I have taken so far at Portland State University would be Statistics (STAT241). During high school, I have always thought that Statistics would be my worst subject ever. However, when I finally took the courage to take the class during Fall term of 2018 to fulfill my degree requirements, I thought that it was not so bad and in fact, was one of the best classes that I have taken during my first year of college. I was also able to learn so many new formulas in Excel that I have never known previously.
What does it mean to you to have been chosen as a Renaissance Scholar?
I am very grateful to be chosen as one of the Renaissance Scholars. Being a Renaissance Scholar does not only mean that I am able to receive financial support but also shows the hard work that I put in to achieve my educational goals.
Any advice for students applying for the Renaissance Scholars program?
I would that just keep going, wherever your destination is. Always express yourself and your values as a reminder for you to keep striving and be successful in your journey. Your own hard work and perseverance will reflect on what you write.
